sounds like you've got a leak if you're needing to top up the coolant. id be checking the radiator and associated hoses

yes if ur driving the car hard that very very small leak will become a lot bigger, air locks will cause the engine temp to fluctuate and the low coolant level causes you loss of heat. if its a small leak radweld may sort it but if not id change the radiator. mine burst last week, picked up a second hand one for £30. had the exacts same symptoms and everything is back to normal now

if your changing the radiator you'll need to drain the coolant anyway. fill it back up slowly and once its pretty much full run the engine with the cap off the expansion tank to allow any air to escape. search the forums, im sure theres a more in depth guide. hope that sorts it for you mate. keep us posted
