Default IAT wiring

Hi, i pluged my car into the diagnostic machine today as im having spluttering problem when cold. There were no fault codes but i noticed in the live data the IAT was reading -40. I tried a different MAF but it was the same.

I checked all the wiring and found the green one goes inside a grey and green wire with silver wire inbetween that (if that makes sence!).

I traced it to the ecu and found that the silver wire is connected to a grey one and the green one comes out of the grey and green and goes to the ecu!

At the MAf side the silver wire is not connected to anything.... should it be?

Now i have a MAF fault code come up but it now runs slightly better

Any thoughts if this is right?

What year car do you have, as i assume you no longer have a classic, as these dont have diagnostic ports (just diagnostic plugs where the light flashes)
