Default VF23 or TD05?

do you mean for 300BHP or higher, VF23 a little old hat, I thought it was fitted to early STi's and overtaken by the VF35 / 34.

Personally I'd go for a genuine VF35 or genuine TD05 16G

Both turbos with a remap and a few supporting mods should see you way past 300 bhp,but the td05 is the stronger of the 2 turbos, being a sleeve bearing opposed to the vf23 roller bearing. It is also getting harder to find a good vf23 nowadays as they are11+ years old, whereas a td05 can be bought new from the likes of andy forrest etc.
