Default Z4 ECU?????

Hello every1 i have a 1995 classic import WRX, and i have a Z4 ECU on it,

ive recently had a full forge rebuild, 3" straight through pipe, uprated fuel pump etc , will i be able to map this ECU or will i have to get another one or a Daughterboard (as they cal them).

and if i do map it (eventually ) will i notice a difference .

I was told it was 300BHP before the engine rebuild but not sure if this is true, would a Z4 ECU be capable of this ??????

Z4 is not mappable per se, you will require a ESL or aftermarket ECU. Here is the spec for the Z4, you will see, not possible to get 300bhp as standard. Hth.

Z4 - 1995/1996 WRX
- 12.7PSI (0.9BAR), DROPPING TO 11.7PSI (0.8BAR) @ 6600RPM
- FUEL CUT 15.65PSI (1.08BAR)
- 260PS (256 BHP)

you cant map the z4 as far as i know. i have a 95 v limited running 260ps as standard i also believe it requires 99ron or higher fuel. i think some z4's run 280ish. you will need a daughterboard or aftermarket ecu.
i think with the mods u have you will 'have' to remap
whats your engine code?

Before I had an ESL daughterboard and re-map I ran a Z4 ECU with a full de-cat exhaust, K&N Induction kit and a Turbosmart DV and I have a RR printout showing 287bhp. I suppose there will always be differences with engines that are or appear to be "the same"

They are all ej20 something lol,
in a nut shell yes it needs mapping unless you decided to run standard boost levels but i would still at least get the afr's checked out.
i ran mine round on a standard ecu for a month or two before i got a chipped one and checked them both on the rollers and the mapper said the standard one would kill my engine if ran over standard boost.
the z4 is not mappable,if you have foreged it you may aswell get a stand alone ecu to get the most out off it.

No re-mapping here. BHP and my best 1/4mile time are listed under my username.

Standard TD05-16g, 380cc injectors running a massive 1bar of boost.

Just because it's worked for me, don't expect it to be ok for you.

Much as b13bat says at post 2 and later.
MickyWRX is an exception to the rule and as you see he readily admits it workd for him but may not work for others.
Deano : You have spent a lot of money on your engine and it would be a great pity to loose it and make a big hole in your pocket because you do not finish the project properly.

The Z4 is generic and not intended for your car and cannot cater for your specific modifications. Even now it may well not be safe and for sure it is not operating effectively or efficiently.
Your options are an ESL board or an aftermarket ECU such as Apexi or better still Simtek.

full forge rebuild, 3" straight through pipe, uprated fuel pump

Didnt think those mods were much, unless the forge rebuild caters alot more than standard spec ???

im running a 95 wrx with Z4 which has a sports cat/3" exhaust/2003 TMIC k&n panel filter and have done for 15k or so now,no running issues as yet,not bragging, but am intrigued as i thought the mods in this thread and the mods i have the Z4 could easily cope with ???

i have no boost spikes, running issues or anything, have a knocklink which only goes bright green when on WOT

???

You have same in yours as I have and I`m standard on a Z4, but engines fully forged etc etc.

I`m using a TD05 turbo for now, but will be going down the Simtek route, as I will be going FMIC and bigger turbo/injectors etc.

As long as you keep the injectors, turbo, and boost within the limits of the ECU then cannot see any issue at all. As the Lambda is precat so decat isn`t an issue, so should be ok still as long as its run on V-Power or Tesco 99.

The Z4 will give an increase in performance but will it be safe?
At the very least get someone that knows what they are doing to put a set of det cans on and check out your AFRs particularly where the car comes on boost and beyond 5500 rpm.
Because it is generic the Z4 is not mapped to your engine requirements and there are therefore big gains to be had going to a mappable ECU.

Harvey's spot on for top performance.

I had a z4 in my previous scoob & this one. Without breaking the bank the best safe way (in my opinion only....) is to get a scoobyecu fitted which will ignore any pre 96' ecu info & tell the car how to run, but much much better & if engine (mainly coil packs are doing well) you will see 280/300 bhp.
My old scoob managed 317 bhp on the rollers at Prosport Stockport & my current i have no idea as i am sorting it all out with new parts etc.
The chip will enable the car to run on super unleaded fuel alone, raise the boost & fuel cut & generally be a safe map for the cars.
