Actively alter valve timing and/or lift (hydraulically I think) to gain upper rpm power.

From: Slowly rebuilding the kit of bits into a car...

The first version works on the inlet cams only, the later version on both inlet and exhaust cams.

All about emissions ( and torque/power ).
