Default question from a newbie...

I have 2002, standard AFAIK, wrx wagon..
I noticed it was smelling of oil an took it to the local dealer who had a look and said someone had filled it up too much with oil and that they had removed a litre of oil from the car and it was still right on the max....

problem i have now is...1st time i use the car from cold i have noticed that i get a lot of oil smell and blue smoke coming out of the air intake (the plastic scoop at the top of the grill.)

I have seen threads on pcv valves etc... but i wonder if it's simply oil in the I/C and induction as a result of being run with too much oil in it..

do i just remove the I/C and pipes and try and clean it all up or does anyone recognise this problem as being something else?

I have about 6 weeks warranty left of a 3 month warranty i got when i bought the car so if it's more serious i'd like to figure it out before the warranty runs out!!

thanks

The driver's side cam cover gasket on these engines often fails. Are you sure the oil vapour isn't emminating from this area, thus 'appearing' as if it's coming from the inlet tract, cited directly above?...

Just a thought.

+1

Had this on mine, exactly as you describe...............it was the rocker cover gasket. Known to be prone to failing.

Why not take it to get it looked at. Most people trying to help you here will look at the post and their 1st thought will be 'rocker cover gasket gone'.

problem found and being resolved tomorrow.....
turns out the top of the radiator was expanding and spraying a small amount of coolant underneath the air intake which made it look like it was coming from the intake...

no major amount so not noticeable as a loss of coolant...
new rad being fitted tomorrow.....

thanks for all the suggestions...it made the dealer look again...more closely this time!!
