classic thermostat
hi all, I just replaced my rad and hoses all went fine no leakes etc, but now i'm only getting cold air out of the heaters untill i'm driving then it's nice and toasty, but as soon as i'm sitting idle it starts blowing cold air, could it be the thermostat as it was blowing warm before the rad change..
Where will I find the thermostat?
I have a gc8 95 import.

Hmm,that certainly is **** over tit, if anything, should be the other way round LOL
id go for an air lock in the system to start with, run the car at idle, with the header tanl cap off for a while, squeezing top hose to expel any air, then, put cap back on,at idle, let it get upto temp, check bottom hose for temp, shpuld get warm after 15-20 mins or so.
oh yeah, the stat is just at the end of the bottom hose, engine block side

Hmm
The heater matrix hoses are to the right of the intercooler, just underneath it,going into the cabin, when the heater blows cold at idle, whats the temp of these 2 hoses ?
very odd this one !

it would do,you only need to squeeze it slowly, darling LOL as if the water level is right to the neck of the header tank, squeezing the hose will push the water out,but its not a problem, just means the level might drop a bit (sometimes you can overfill the system and it doesnt sip out to the overflow bottle near the battery)
im guessing the water level in the header tank is now below the neck and squeezin the hoses doesnt result in overspill ?
if so,all is good still, let it run for a while with cap off, then refit cap to pressurise the system,,another 10-15 mins running at idle
the top/bottom hose should get solid to the, squeeze so to say LOL

if you can see the water level still in the header tank (you didnt lose too much ) id leave it as is for now, pressurise the system, check top and bottom hose for pressure/temp,if both get hot/warm thats good, means the stat has opened (if the bottom one gets warm) fanss hould kick in when the needle on the dash is halfway for around 15 mins or so.
you should get some warm air from the blowers even if not pressurised
if you still get cold on idle but hot when driving, that is weird, have to think about that one some more

bottom hose does take ages to get warm, the thermostat doesnt open to 78 degrees and if its original, maybe a smidge later (lazy)
keep at it, is the top hose pressurised yet ?
solid to the squeeze, wahay LOL and if so,what about the bottom hose, still squishy ? fans kicked in yet ?

when you say water draining, near empty,do you mean the water level in your header tank is now lowering as the car continues to run ? (not lowering from the earlier squeeze of the rad hose )
If the level is dropping that much,it was a big air lock LOL or you squeezed to hard, too many inuendos, anyhoo,if the level is silly low in the header tank,do top it up,but not to its neck, refit the header tank cap and allow to fully pressurise then we can go from there, once the hoses are solid, top and bottom and bottom one gets hot, check for hot air etc out of heaters, allow car to cool, check the level in the headertank

i have a similar problem, i have changed coolant hoses and thermostat. id say the heater warms up nicely then blows toasty as above. however the point on my dial where the air changes from cold to hot as you turn it changes. sometimes its one click above the 19 marker, othertimes its nearer the 25 one. hows that work? would outside temps affect this?
