Default Power Steering Pump Problem?

I started my car today (first time in around a week), as i started to turn the steering wheel i noticed a winding noise and is constantly there when i turn left or right. Im guessing this is the power steering pump? how long can i drive the car like this and what are the costs approximately to replace it?

any help or info will be very much appreciated.

regards

John

A replacement pump/reservoir/pully assembly is c.£30-40 second hand.

start it, run it for a bit turn it lock to lock a few times then see, my guess is if there was no wining before you parked it up,the will be ok just fluid has ran back out the pump. gotta be worth a shot, its free!!

It'll prob be the rack that fails if driven with a defective pump/low fluid for any lengh of time. But the pump will prob get knackered quickly too.

Can you not put bits of white paper underneath the full span of the rack, overnight? Then check in the morning for any obvious leaking from pump or rack.

But, as above, do that procedure first (after ensuring the reservoir is topped right up first)...

i drove the car for around 2 miles, steering normally around corners (never lock to lock). When i got home it was still making the noise, will lock to lock make much difference?
