Default thermostat help

Hi lads can anyone tell me where the thermostat is on my wrx bug is? I noticed the temp rocketing today and called the recovery people out. The fella has checked the rad pipes and the top one is hot but the bottom one is cold. He seems the think the thermostat isnt opening and this is causing it to overheat. I checked the water and it was low so filled it up and now is low again butr no signs of a water leak.

any help would be appreciated

Low water and overheating suggest an air lock in the rad stopping circulation through it.
Has the system been emptied recently - it may not have been bled properly?
Constant filling up could be a hose leak or something more sinister.
If the level still drops when full and properly bled then have the system pressure tested.

As above it's an air lock. Easy one to solve. The way I did was to take cap off and ran car until hot and warched bubbles come up the level drops just top up as you go.
