Default Brake shoe problem

Hi guys,

I'm changing my pads and discs at the rear and have ran into a problem with the handbrake shoes, they seem to have cut a groove into the drum and now wont allow the drum off past them, even with the adjuster fully adjusted off.
The 'bits' inside have also fallen apart, a bit.

So what's the easiest way to get the disc off now? Angle grinder and cut the disc in half?

And any recommendations for new shoes and the bits?
I suppose any shoes of the correct size etc will do, but you don't normally get all the bits with them do you...

Screw the two studs thro the disc until the disc comes away then tap hub area from underneath while putting more load on,hopefully the parts that are catching will bounce over the wear lip or slide hammer bolted to release bolts, have you released h/brake cable right back, good luck

Handbrake cable is released as far as it will go, and handbrake is off.

Done the M8 bolts, one stripped threads in the disc!

Done tapping and hammering, all to no avail.

Suspect it'll be an angle grinder job on Saturday.

Have a look at the rear of the backplate near the bottom, little oblong rubber bung, prize it out and there is a toothed adjuster behind it, you need to poke about with a screwdriver and turn the wheel to back the shoes off, then the disc will just pull off.

Hi everone by the way

If you have the manual adjusters fully backed off, the shoes will clear any wear/rust lip. As such, one asks whether you're absolutely sure they're fully wound in.

Yea, as fully wound in as they'll go.

But the retaining pins with the springs don't have springs on them and are loose/out, so I suspect that might be contributing to the problem.

I've got new shoes and new disks, so just need to get the pins etc to sort it when I destroy them taking it all apart!

Ok, managed to cut the disc with the angle grinder and got it off.

Main problem has been the rubber bung for the adjuster hole was missing, so the locating pins and sorings had corroded and had fallen apart, probably not helped by me trying to pull it off.

New problem though is that although I managed to get new pins, springs and caps (for £40! from Subaru!!) a couple of the other bits need replaced too, oh and the new shoes I got are the wrong ones.

No handbrake for me for the next couple of days then!
