Likely to be wind catching the scoop or door frames - does it sound like a siren?

A bit of a shock when you first hear it

Try to push out (gently with fingers) front window, while it's happening and see if the sound will be any different or will disappear. The same thing is going on on sister's Forester at 180km/h+.

Put it this way, from experience, if you are going fast enough for the mirrors/scoop/windows to howl then you are definitely doing less than 10 mpg LOL

Yes, could well be the rev limit alarm set to a low figure by thee previous owner? (probably 5k rpm?) Did a red light appear on the rev counter, as well?

It's definitely a wind noise. My dad's WRX had this. Hilarious when we first heard it! It's a problem with the seals I believe.

check the rev limiter it was turned off. I think it is wind noise as I can faintly hear it at lower speeds. does anyone know what causes it and is there is a cure for it other than slowing down lol ?
