2002 WRX AVCS??
Hi all,
is there any chance that my 2002 WRX has an AVCS?
excuse my technical ignorance but I have no idea how to check this.

ok thanks gents.
reason I ask is that I had the camshaft sensor changed and then after driving the car for a few hours the engine light came back on and its giving the camshaft sensor fault again. The sensor was brand new and from main dealers.
Any ideas?

Yes...My 2002 WRX bugeye wagon was prone to this as are many. Specially after you have been out for a long run and then slow down again, or if you have a quick blatt it will sometimes come on and then go off after a few restarts or overnight.
A reset will get rid of it but it may well come back. Your options are to identify which camshaft sensor is giving the fault. If it's the sensor on the other bank have that changed, alternatively if it's the new one you've just had done just have the DTC turned off. Did they change both cam sensors??
Unlikely it's affecting the way the car runs and more likely it's just a false positive. Very likely there is nothing wrong with the CAM sensor and a remap may well help allowing the corresponding DTC's to be turned off within ROM itself.

It was only the one sensor that was changed. I didn't know it had 2 cam sensors. I know nothing about engines being honest.
DTC??
The car is not driving as it should. It seems like at times its not getting enough petrol or something. When driving the car shudders and theres a loss of power and then a few seconds later the power is back and the car takes off as it should.
Roughly what should a remap cost?

I've just had a look around and spotted a Jap WRX wagon in the UK with a 4spd tiptronic box and AVCS called a 20K. It's such a shame they didn't carry those mods over to EDM cars.
I've never come across a WRX NB-R in the UK but happy to know there is one about.

I am sure that all JDM Bugeye WRX's saloons have AVCS, not just special editions: that's primarily why their engines produced 247bhp, compared to the 215bhp of the non-AVCS UK car. I have driven both and could certainly tell the difference in performance.

I've just dug around a bit and all newage JDM WRX's do indeed have AVCS as well as higher compression ratio of 9.0:1. I have to say though i don't think i have ever physically come across a newage JDM WRX, only lots of JDM STi's.

UK WRX's don't have AVCS until the V9 2.5's.

I stripped the old cabin loom out and replaced it with an STi loom.
In the end i felt changing the loom was worthwhile rather than modify the WRX loom to run the AVCS, and it was a good opportunity to get intimate with the electrics. It required minimal mods to the loom to run the rear wash wipe. Everything else was pretty much the the same plug for plug. I was lucky enough to get the loom and ECU from the same vehicle so there were no immobiliser to ECU issues apart from a straight resync of the ignition keys.
Job done!!

Had the the faults cleared again and drove the car for the evening.The engine light came on again after an hour or so.
The following faults are showing now:
PO171: system to lean
PO301: cylinder 1 misfire
PO302:cylinder 2 misfire
PO303: cylinder 3 misfire
Any ideas as to the problem?

System too lean could be your MAF sensor on the way out.
Misfire codes have come up very probably as a result of the system too lean DTC although i used to get this quite often after a long run on the motorway, you suddenly come up against traffic, slow down and the misfire codes come up. Again sometimes there's no bloody reason for it and another false positive but the fact the system too lean has come up as well tells me you have an issue.
I'd look at the MAF sensor as possible problem. If it's not reading sufficient airflow (which is what normally happens as they start to break down) and the true aiflow is much higher the ECU won't inject sufficient fuel and you get misfires, and fuelling goes lean, although you won't neccessarily get a MAF sensor error code.
As an outside bet maybe Lambda sensor but they usually throw a code when they go wrong.

You should get it tested before you go buying a new one, and when you buy one you don't need the housing with it as well, just the cartridge, otherwise it will be very expensive from a Subaru stealership.
Best way to test it out is have a mate with a newage WRX or STi that you can briefly swap with as they are so easy to change, just to see if it is that causing your problem. Change the MAF, ECU reset, drive, and drive, and drive some more. If after a few miles nothing happens you know it's the MAF sensor that's faulty.
I'd help you out but unfortunately you're in Ireland!!
ETA: MAF is usually a dealership part however some subaru specialists may well have a new one in stock and i hope would be cheaper than the stealership. Alternatively get a used one from a good breakers like Grade A Subaru. I got one from him over 2years ago and it's still working perfectly to this day. They don't often go wrong, and like Lambda sensors your average newage scoob might go through two of them in it's lifetime.

I'm working with a chap who has an 04 WRX so might ask him if he can help me out.
I'd do as you suggested and if it is gone then I'll probaly get one from a breakers.
