I run a 5w40 fully synthetic, these engines are improved over the older design (saying that I run the same oil in my classic too
) as really you dont need much more unless you track, then a 10w50 would be more suited to your needs

I use 5w30 and 5w40(summer) in my MY06 STI, tracked as well.
Bit of a can of worms Gary, but I would imagine most people would go down the smaller numbers route.
Mind you, I never modded the engine of either (well PPP if that is a mod) car.
Excellent, any recommendations? (Millers/Mobile 1/Motul etc...)
Also - what else is needed for the 70,000 miles service?
Oil & oil filter obviously, but would you recommend doing plugs/fuel filter etc?
Am going to put a STI panel filter in aswell whilst it is being done. (a garage is doing the service, but i'd rather have my choice of parts go onto it)

I use millers CFS 10W60 as it goes on track when I stop messing with it...
As your's is likely to do the same, stick with it IMHO.
dunx
P.S. I also found an oil cooler helped @ 390+ bhp.

I'm sure you can get away with 10w/40 if not being fettled with mate.
On the other hand I use now 15w 50 Pro S in my car. Works pretty well and the oil temp hasn't gone over 103 since changing from 5w 40.
May have 5ltrs at home if you wanna try it mate?

A 5w-40 is the way to go in a newage

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Gulf Formula G, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Synt S are good, cheaper alternatives.
As usual with an oil thread, I'll say that a 10w-60 is too thick for an Impreza, new or old. A 10w-50 is as thick as you want to go. You may think the 10w-60 is doing no harm, but over time the engine will be wearing quicker than in a car using the right oil.

Oilman,
I've been getting my oil and other fluids off of you for a around 3 years now. I find the above info a little confusing?
I was running the 5w-40 in my car when running at 400bhp. I used that on two oil changes but rang you guys when I was upping the power and was advised to go 10w-50 (All Pro S).
What point would you suggest the grade of oil needs to change depending on the power of each person from one person to the other.

It depends on a few things, what mods have been done to up the power, how the car gets used, the mileage can affect it. I'm not sure what is confusing about the information. This is a very general view, but in a new age, you use a 5w-40 up to about 400 ish bhp (depending on the use and it needs to be a top quality one if it's heading towards the 400bhp), then past that, or in a car that is used on track a fair bit, switch to a 10w-50
Oilman,
All I was asking was what point you change up to which you have now confirmed in my case I have the right stuff.
But, what for example would a standard 2.0 turbo WRX & STi use? Also would the 2.5 turbo WRX and STi use different grades?
Not being picky just adding and prompting for new users to the forum that may be confused a little.
I am sure most SUBARU mainstealers use 10w -40 in WRX and STi?

Hi Steve
Ah, I see now.
Yes, main dealers are likely to use a 10w-40 simply as it's cheap and ok to use in classics and newage cars.
Below is a bit of a generalisation. If you've got quite a few mods, it's always worth asking.
Classics like a 10w-40 as standard or lightly modified, 10w-50 if heavily modified or tracked on a regular basis.
Newer ones are better off with a 5w-30 or 5w-40, a 5w-40 even with quite a few mods and a fair bit of track use and a 10w-50 if highly modified and /or tracked often.
