Unless you're going to track it for sustained periods, the negatives outweigh the positives on the basis of your current setup. I will take you out in mine if you want Darc

What negatives are these then?

All this about Lag when you go to front mount is relative nonsense.

I would recommend a Hybrid GT2 Intercooler kit from Harvey on here. £335 +£12.50 next day delivery. Excellent quality and good for 700bhp no problem.

Lol Daz, I haven't the energy to debate 'relatives' with you mate

Darc, I love my Hybrid and I have little lag now, however knowing your current set up it and love of 0-60's I think your TMIC is 'relatively' better suited short-medium term. FMIC are a lot of faff and cost, money is better spent on more Whiteline parts atm IMHO. Besides your exhaust is way too noisey for sustained track use to justify the FMIC anyway

STi TMIC will max out at around 420-450 Bhp. Been told to expect mine to be at it's limits once the current mods have been completed. I'll be going for one of Harveys GT2s in the long term

Hi Darc,

I would stick with the STi8 TMIC.

STi8 TMIC + TD05-16g = a stormer of a car.

If you do decide to go FMIC, we have them here for just £194.99: http://www.superhids.co.uk/special-o...kit-fmic-.html

Over which intercooler did the front mount demonstrate a 17bhp increase, and were there any other factors at play that may have skewed the results (one way or the other)?

It was a 17bhp gain from the Standard Version 4 Type R Intercooler. The map on my Simtek ECU was altered aswell which probably did have an effect on the gain

Thanks, that's handy info. Now we need someone to tell us what sort of power gain they were able to get by going from a standard facelift classic IC to a newage STi one to get some idea of the comparative abilities of the two.

It's an issue for Darc to consider; If we were to assume that your figure is typical and that a newage STi IC is no better than a version 4 one (which is not the case in practice), your number would suggest that his investment in a front mount will get him, at most, 17 horsepower. Although in practice as we know that the newage STi IC is considerably better than the classic one, especially when properly ventilated, the gain is going to be smaller, assuming it is there.

If, we were to assume that the newage STi IC is worth, say, 10bhp over the facelift classic IC, that means his investment in a front mount will only be getting him 7bhp. Hmmm, would be nice to get some more comparative figures.

Not to mention the distribution of power, peak bhp, changes to peak boost @ what RPM etc etc, it's a bigger discussion that 17bhp increase case close

This has been done to death. Do a search and you will find lots of varying opinions. What you need are facts. Here is one example which was documented and reported on at the time each run was done.
The car is an STi 3 Wagon. It produced 335 bhp with the O/E turbo, injectors, top mount and ECU with a GBE boost valve around 1.4 bar. In this set up it was easily possible to have Air Charge Temperatures off the guage scale at 70C in a sprint from 0-100mph. The turbo was way outside its efficiency envelope.
I fitted an STi 8 TMIC. Initial results were disappointing until I fitted the scoop and undertay from the same car the top mount came from. I also did some work to further seal, in part, the undertray skirts to the intercooler. Results were quite acceptable but fitting the top mount was a bigger job than was anticipated. Brackets had to be made and the ICVS relocated.
The car underwent a series of modifications, trials and testing on a variety of components including turbo configurations. A Simtek ECU was fitted. Power rose as various turbos were trialed etc. From the ACT guage readings and previous experience, it was obvious that charge temperatures could be reduced with an efficient front mount. 20-25C over ambient was easily achievable.
To examine the differences between the TMIC fitted and the FMIC that would replace it, we put the car on the rollers and the Simtek ECU tweaked with a maximmum power figure of 392 bhp. From memory, ACTs during mapping were 43-44 deg C and Steve Simpson had already commented that other similar cars with Hybrid front mounts were running much lower ACTs.
A Hybrid GT was fitted. Nothing else was done to the car before it returned to the same rolling road. We immediately achieved a run of 401 bhp. Adjustments were then made to the map and we ended with a safe road map at 410 bhp. ACTs were 21-23C from memory on a day when ambients were slightly higher.
So a gain of 9 bhp from a Hybrid GT frontmount on the same spec, map, fuel, rolling road etc. etc. and a further 9bhp from mapping. We could get a little more out of the car but left it safe at 410 bhp. We set off to get factual information and make the test as repeatable as possible and we did nothing to unfairly influence the results.
Boost threshold remained unchanged and there was no discernable lag difference.
The car runs typically up to 6C over ambient and on WOT and hard driving it can reach 12C over. On top speed running with prolonged WOT the maximum I have seen is 15C over ambient.
Since these trials I have come across figures in a reference book which says that for every 4 deg C change in ACT there will be a 1% power difference.
Furthermore, on the strength of the above and other observations on the rolling road, Steve Simpson has fitted a Hybrid GT FMIC to his rally car fitted with a Type 'C' engine. He sees enough top mount and front mount cars every month to know what does and does not work.
