comes from cylinder head porting where you can change the size of the inlet and exhaust ports to change the airflow. You can affect gas speed/torque/spool/efficiency by changing diameters that the air flows through or by matching e.g. exhausts to cylinder heads and gaskets to remove obstructions. Commonly applied to anywhere air/charge flows.

Not much point doing heads. Doing headers will see a benefit.
match the up pipe. increases gas flow producing more torque, and spool. Heat wrapping will help, keep gases hot in turn speeding them up.
