Default Timing Kit vs Belt Only

Im going to venture into a timing belt change on my bugeye in a couple of weeks and am looking at belt only and belt kit prices.

Is it reasonable to change the belt only on a 84,000 mile car or isnt it worth doing unless i do the whole shooting match incl idlers/tensioners etc.

As a side point, i put a post on a while ago about what belts are ok to fit and found that Gates are as good as any, does anyone have any other suggestion apart from genuine subaru? I see a lot of Dayco around.... any good?

Thanks!

I have had dayco cam belt and they are just as good.
I have only ever bought just cam belt. I would like to know the answer to this to as am I doing the right thing just buying cam belt.
I understand that it probably is a good idea to buy he kit as everything will be new and free. Apart from that is it worth it, or just high milage?

If you can afford it, it won't hurt to change it all.
We just replace any dodgy ones, and it's a policy that's never caused any problems.

Easy to replace bits while the belt is off, cheaper than doing it again JUST to replace bits, and FAR cheaper than if one of the bits destroys the belt.......

thanks for the replies.

I guess it always comes down to money with these things, as im a bit short (5'7" hahaha.....) i can only afford the belt at the moment and getting the rest of the bits would mean another couple of months wait so i'll go for belt only and see if there are any signs of wear on the other components
