Default MY98 over heating

Hi
Went for a quick spin in my my98 uk turbo yesterday and when I pulled up the drive I noticed smoke coming from the bonnet vents.
The header tank was overflowing and causing the steam but the temp gauge always stayed at just under halfway all the time.
Let it cool down and removed the header tank cap, of which the seal has been melted on it aswell. And it carried on rising and over flowing but still not showing anything wrong on the temp gauge.
What sort of things can I try to try and solve this or to find the cause?
Any help would be much appreciated

could it be a air lock or would that cause the temp gauge to rise?

lls, I have an OEM 0.9bar one sitting in my glovebox. There's nothing wrong with it (I bought a new one when I had overheating problems, but it proved that the cap wasn't at fault, etc.)

I can post it out to you for free if you PM me your address...
