Default td05 18g on a 95wrx ?

Hi all , thinking of putting a 18g turbo on my 95 wrx , is this a good choice of turbo for getting my wrx to around 350bhp it currently has a td05 16g
but have read on here that they don't always make the power, so thinking of the 18g , but is this turbo overkill for my car ,
I know it will break the gearbox , but planning on running it until it breaks then replace it with a stronger box , just want to make it into a nice road car , so don't want too much lag,
any advice welcome, cheers

so far on engine it has:
hybrid FMIC
Decat
blitz nurspec r exhaust full system
nismo 740cc injectors
simtek ecu
k&N induction
ported and wrapped headers

Keep with the 16g, that will make 350bhp, much more and you have a very large risk of engine failure due to mechanicals breaking (mainly the crap rods), the 18G will just make it laggier and 550/565's are all you need injector wise.

18g is the perfect "biggest" choice turbo for the MY93-96 WRX. The heads can limit to 380 (the 18g's upper limit) anyway, so may aswell benefit from its decent spool. Plus it doesn't suffer surge issues like the 20g can. Get either AF's 18g or harvey's one. harvey's is a little keener on price and is fully ported etc. Both perform pretty much the same AFAIK.

550cc injectors would be a better choice TBH - maybe driven by a Fuelab adj. FPR too.

But yeah, your spec will make for a great road car.... until the 'box breaks.

so would the standard engine take this ok without any work ?, i'm not expecting it to be reliable like this as it is a 15 year olds lol , and expecting the box to break ,
the thing is i thought about keeping the 16g and making it more reliable , but i do very little miles , so thought about going for the 18g
one more question , on the simtek ecu i have can have 2 maps i think , if i had 1 map say for less power and 1 for higher power , would this help the gearbox/engine,
thanks for reply

Well having 2 maps would be good for your fuel consumption but I doubt it will save your gearbox, they usually just go bang with no warning, and the older ones are pretty weak, hence why subaru uprated them for the new age cars

I have been considering bolting my AFP 20g onto my standard 1993 WRX engine, so will keep an eye on this thread (the engine will only need to last 6 months max, very little miles, but will be used on track)

I'm also going the 20g/550/FMIC route on my MY93 WRX...

Good choice

Not sure how long the standard internals will last, but the new block is sitting in bits waiting to be put together, so will make me pull my finger out in getting that sorted

I've got STi v.3/4 pistons + Hawkeye STi rods + ACL Race Series bearings set, in mine (Zen rebuild).

Should be good for this side of 400/400... 'box a different matter though.

are you on the stadard box aswell joz ?,
is the 6 speed the only option that will not break , would a hawkeye 5 speed box work or even fit a classic , as they seem a bit more reasonably priced - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/subaru-impreza...item2a06a07496

Don't need that much power to fubar an early box, on my 3rd box now.

I obliterated one with "only" 289lb/ft

I've still got my 16.5yo box yes!

If you're gonna upgrade (either now or when it breaks), 3 options (don't consider a New Age WRX 5-sp):-

* New Age STi 6-sp (I think the later the STI MY, the even stronger the 'box ???).

* PPG gearset (but 5th is left std ... unless you go for their more expensive full gear sets.

* Scooby Clinic have just released a strong 'box/gearset... and they have given it death on track (as fitted to one of their very high powered competiton/demo cars)... and it came through without a hitch.

That will fit, make sure you get the rear diff if you decide to buy it though.

Will need your block tapped to accept an extra bolt though, IIRC.

Oh for sure mick. I'm running 273lb ft currently... clutch and box all good - so far! (I do treat them well though).

I was actually referring to my "STi'd" engine internals... Even so, at 380-400 it'll prob be a bit Russian Roulette

im on similar mods to op,

v1 sti-basically wrx engine, with apexi instead of simtek.

roughly 310-320bhp just now with an ra box - short ratio, been worried about it going but so far has has done the job, with some launches and hard-ish driving.

going for 550's and got my z32 maf and harvey smith td05-18g ready to go.

hope to get 350bhp maybe a touch more and use until g/box-rod breaks

then its 2.1 forged time.

then its 2.1 forged time..........

still dosent put a 6 speed in it, or cure your gearbox problem.

Has anyone tried puting the gears 0f a 6 speed in to a 5 speed box. Instead of buying a ppg kit, why not use 6 speed gears, uprated selectors and shafts in a five speed casing. Its got to be possible.

I believe a 6 speed box is bigger than a 5 speed, it's definitely heavier. Therefore, I don't think there's the space to fit a 6 speed gearset into the 5 speed case.
