Question TMIC disconnected - can I run the engine??

Hello,

I'm planning, weather dependant, to carry out quite a few mods to my MY00 UK turbo this week and need some advise please.

I will be changing the TMIC for a bigger one and fitting a decat downpipe amongst other things.

To save time, if I remove the old TMIC can I start the car and run it to then put it up on ramps so I can change the downpipe or is running the engine for even a short length of time bad if the tmic ic removed?

Thank you, hope you've enjoyed your extra long weekend - shame about the weather.

It will struggle to run without the TMIC connected. At worst it will cut out, at best it will overfuel and hunt like a ****.

No damage will happen though.

Hmmm i dunno about no damage, if something gets sucked up direct into the engine with the tmic removed that is going to be bad...

I would get hold of a cheap air filter cone and temporarily attach it direct to the TB with a suitable sized hose - unless the cone's neck bolts straight on, of course. (Maybe you could temp. blag the cone and/or hose from a mate so you don't have to pay...)

Or maybe even jubille clip, or cable tie, some muslin around the TB! lol

That way, as above, at least you'll prevent debris from getting in...!!!

Realistically the guy is only running it on a ramp, so the debris thing should not be a problem. Depends on how risk free you want to be.

You can't take ANYTHING for granted with these cars - the resultant, and otherwise preventable, ballache/expense would be too hard to swallow.

ive dont it with mine, it will run fine, its just not going to read the air flow because the maf will not be conected, so may run lumpy,

you will not brake anything at all, if your being corshous then put some cotton cloth over the throttle body to stop sucking up crap,, job done...

You will need to unplug the MAF sensor for it to run like that, but should be fine for the purposes of getting it on the ramp.

How hard would it be to remove the TMIC while on the ramp?

It doesn't hurt to know either way before hand.

Tie wrap a sock to the throttle body.

I tried to start mine while part way through a TMIC change - it wouldn't start at all.

Ah, but did you disconnect the MAF's electrical connector, as Paul mentioned above?!

It'll run if the MAF is disconnected, with the MAF still connected it'll run like a burst couch

I'm right out of tight so that ideas out!!

Thanks for all the answers - in the event I loosened everything whilst it was on the deck, then put it on the ramps and then removed the TM.

Aren't those standard downpipes with the cat in seriously heavy!!
