Default Internal fan randomly turning off and A/C cutting fan off....?

Hi All,

Bit baffled at this one...

1997 WRX STi

If I hit the air con button it lights up orange (other half says it used to be green?) and within 5 seconds the blower fan is cut off and the air con goes off. Few seconds later it'll all come back on and repeat as before.

If the air con is off and the fan is on, it will stay blowing for most of the time but then randomly switch off completely for a short while. No adjusting of the fan **** will kick it back into action.

The only thing I have fiddled with on the entire car this week was fitting Lockwood white dials (dear god, another hell of a tale... and the rev counter is now as useful as a chocolate tea pot, it's so lazy. got to sort that) so I can't see I've done anything to mess it up (this time!)...

Any ideas anyone?

Rich.

yep used tea spoons lol. i think i just need to fiddle with the rev counter to make it free to drop itself back down to zero.

air con / fan issue is baffling me now though....

if you have it set to auto the clutch will click in and out automatically as it needs to.
the air con in on when the light is orange, off when green.

Oh this is a definite fault then.
No matter what temperature inside and out, it clicks on, goes off and turns the fans off even when the fans set to high.
Bear in mind the fan is turning itself off randomly whilst set to High with the air con off. Then it comes back on again a while later.

Does this sound like the control unit? If so, where is it located and where am I likely to find one?

Did you have the dial switched on cold or boiling hot when it cuts out?
The fact is that your car has climate control, it will cut out and back on randomly as it adjusts the internal temperature to what you have the dial set to.

Even when the A/C is off, the fan is randomly turning off even when set right to High.
Tried the A/C when very hot and very cold and it dies after 5 seconds and takes the fan with it. Engine is up and down constantly every few seconds.
Very odd. It was fine until yesterday!
