Direct swap, no, not without a fair bit of work to get it running.
Its always best to swap like for like, or just get your engine rebuilt, probably end up cheaper in the long run as you can replace the crank with the later JDM twin scroll one which provides better oil distribution to the bearings.

Thanks for the reply mate ! im not very clued up in the engine changing department lol
i have the chance to buy complete sti engine including the ecu/ exhaust removed from a late 99 . 1 local mechanic said if i change the inlet manifold to the one from my original wrx Y reg(Bugeye) it will go in and run another mechanic said only the block will be compatable and would need the heads etc swopping over....its allways good to have another opinion. im not looking for better performance i just need the car back on the road. Thanks for any help

If your priorities are as above avoid the STi engine. You shouldn't have too much of a problem finding an 01/02MY direct replacement.
