Joz, aren't you a couple of steps ahead of the OP, or approaching his question from the wrong angle here? His question was what he would need to do to fit an FMIC, not how he would need to modify his car to justify fitting one.

on a td04 its not worth it, its about the only time when not even proper setting up can get rid of lag, the turbo is just too small.
stay with the top mount untill you change the turbo

It's his choice. If he does decide to go ahead with FMIC, then we don't want the fella's engine going bang, do we? It's more an offer of precaution, than anything else.
As per the other thread, he shouldn't bother if he doesn't intend to go bigger obrut/injectors............

ata guess you wont havea td04 (assuming the 290 figure is correct), but you need to identify that before doing anything.
then when you have you will find out if you need a fuel pump, injecotrs (which i doubt) or a front mount etc.

Actually, we're all sort of in agreement lol.
290 is possible on a TD04, although is the exception rather than the rule. For one thing, the TMIC - certainly if it's a MY94-96 tiny 'slanty' (in which case it would have a TD05 anyway) - would prob limit it to <280, regardless of TD04 or TD05.
The salient mods mentioned in post #2 still stand (with FMIC and remap)... but which MY car do you have?

Dave, trust you won't mind me quoting your PM here:
If you're at 290 now, that's correct. Fitting a front mount intercooler at that power level won't get you more on its own, and potentially causes you problems unless you buy a good one and have it properly mapped in. Even then, at this power level a top mount IC is a better compromise between intercooler efficiency and intake tract volume.
Right. As above, simply fitting a front mount intercooler won't get you a magical power increase, and some of the things you will need to do to support it (i.e. removing standard induction, if fitted, and replacing with a cone) will need mapping around anyway.
Seems you're approaching this question from the wrong starting point. If you're trying to get more horsepower than you've got, and you want specific advice from us, you're first going to have to tell us what sort of car you're driving, what model year it is and how it came to be producing its current level of power (i.e. what the current modifications are).
If as has already been said you have a UK spec car with a TD04 turbo, you're not going to get an appreciable power hike until you get rid of it and fit something bigger. Even then, at the 350-380bhp level you're still better off with a better top mount IC than a front mount. Best way forward now is to tell us what you have, how much power you want to achieve and how much you want to spend to get it.

350... OR... 400? - will dictate which turbo. There could be an appreciabe difference in price between 350 and 400 turbos - depending on what you go for and/or whether new or second-hand etc etc....
W-reg MY00 so your std ECU can be ECUTek'd as regards mapping.

The great thing is, your heads will flow you the 400bhp that you want easily (saw your PM - btw just post on here, it's easier!)....... The "bad" news is that you need to fit uprated pistons/rods/bearings/MLS HGs (possibly ARP head studs too) before you can even consider your turbo options!!!
Then you've got the bloomin gearbox to worry over...
[BTW, an MD321H - or even the SC40 Billet! (see here: https://www.scoobynet.com/trader-ann...better-13.html) - mapped on V-Power should get you to 400bhp on 550s/FMIC].
You really ought to revise-down your goal to sub-350, in which case, as previously mentioned, a VF35 will be a straight fit and offer excellent low-down spool for a good price (normally one for sale 2nd hand on here and/or eBay in any given week). Even then, it's no guarantee your engine/box will last for any appreciable time...............

Yes mate - it is your best bet.
By all means, if you want to save up for all those mods then that would be a sensible course of action. That way, you can enjoy the car as-is (not exactly slow at 290bhp is it?! ), whilst you enjoy saving and rubbing your hands in excited anticipation, with a miserly bent lol.....
