Default ABS Cuts in under gentle braking, can anybody help, please?

My ABS cuts in when it shouldn't.

Everytime i come to a gentle stop my ABS kicks in! The pedal vibrates and sort of springs back on me,making a strange noise. this will happen in all weather conditions!

It doesn't happen at normal speeds, just the last couple of seconds of braking as im coming to a halt.

any ideas people?
Thanks,
kev

happened on my bmw, pluged it in and it was an "open circuit on the N/S front wheel speed sensor". not sure if scoobys have the same system. if u know anyone with a fault code reader could be worth a try

What age vehicle mate? Has it only just started or has it always been there? I have had on a couple of occasions(but not on subarus mind you) the abs ring on the driveshaft had come adrift and was not rotating at shaft speed and sometimes stopped spinning giving the impression of that wheel locking up, it may be worth having a quick look at them.
Cheers,
James.

Its probably a crack or tooth missing on onr of the abs rings

Best to jack the car up wheel by wheel and turn the drive train slowly while inspecting the rings>

Make sure you have a good look as only needs to be a hairline crack and will cause your symtoms

HI mate
I've had this problem on a couple of different car in the passed and it was the abs ring on the cv joint had cracked. the fault happens because you have a larger gap on the ring which the sensor picks up on.
I would carefully check all 4 rings

hope this helps

Phill

could just be a dirty sensor? or a break in wire causing high resistance? going on previous experiences but not with subaru's. worth a look while your checking the rings.

I have the same problem on my 02 wrx sportwagon I took abs fuse out to see if it was abs after hearing the chattering sound on front drivers side.
That was after changing cv joint hub put new pads on and changed caliper.
Going to have a bash at doing the flash code test after I find the wires under dash.
I have inspected sensors the rears had a lot of dirt on them cleaned them but still making noise when braking.
I have took fuse out seems to affect flashing of the lights when activating the alarm hope that's all it affects. Also the abs light and handbrake light is on the dash no noise though braking seems fine till I decifer fault codes.

I had same problem. Didn't loosen the handbrake shoes properly when changing the rear discs and pads and bent the abs ring very slightly. The abs would only cut in at very low speeds and was fine the rest of the time. New abs ring from import car parts sorted it. An expensive lesson for me to learn when changing rear brake discs!
