turbo comparison
Hi poeple, can any one tell me what would be the better choice of turbo to give a faster spool up, a td04 hybrid or a vf22/23. currently running tdo5, kakumi gt headers(heat wrapped) 440 injectors, fuel lab reg, walbro 255 pump, samco inlet pipe, fmic & apexi fc ecu. the car is a 97 classic uk but the td05 doesn't suit the uk gearing i find (slow 2nd gear corners off boost). i am getting 1 bar boost at 3000 rpm but not much below. i liked the characteristics of the standard td04, but would like around 320 bhp, similar to what i have got now but with a faster spool time. the car was mapped at scoobyclinic on 95 ron fuel & without the headers, making 305 bhp.
Any advice would be great.

The AF Hyrid TD04 will be the earliest spooling.
If you map it with your current mods, then it should make full boost in the 2500-3000rpm bracket, I'm led to believe. The wrapped aftermarket headers really help here! - although I don't know if your ones are too 'big' for the AF TD04's modest airflow??? Perhaps a set of harvey's OEM ported/wrapped ones and a suitable sized uppipe replacement, might be more suitable???
I think you'll only see an absolute max of 310 from it on V-Power - but at least your current mods are more than enough for that 'dream' lol to be realised....

I don’t see why you have spent the money on mods but have the car mapped for 95 Ron? This will affect spool up for sure due to the amount of ignition timing used on the map or lack of in this case, im not sure swapping the turbo is the right choice here. You should be seeing around 330 on that setup with V power. Your not going to see a decent improvement on the turbos's you have mentioned if continued to run on 95...

i'm not running on 95 ron any more, but the point is the td05 still won't spool up much before 3000 rpm no matter what fuel running, except carlos racing maybe. i think a td04 hybrid would make a faster twisty's b road blaster than a td05!!!
As for mapping on 95, well if thats the only **** up i make then i can live with that. easliy rectified.

afp tdo4 in my opinion would be fastest but will run out at about 320 max then probably the vf23 with the slowest being vf22 which is real laggy (std 22b fitment) im gonna keep a eye on this thread as im runnig a wrx engine in my terzo and was wondering on a afp td04 or a converted fe td05

The fuel will have a big effect on your performance. The AF TD04 is fast spooling on a good set up it may pull 320, the vf 34 & 35 works better on Uk cars imo.

The TD04 hybrid will respond sharpest on std or std ported headers and a std bore uppipe, the Kakumi headers are suited to applications up to 500+bhp so are a bit on the large side for circa 310bhp, you are probably losing more at the bottom end than you are gaining at the top end. Despite having a higher peak bhp you may end up with a slightly slower car.
I still use totally std headers and a mildly ported uppipe on my spec C which runs circa 480bhp. For scoobysprint and road use I prefer the quicker response out or corners and roundabouts rather than the few bhp that may be available at the top end.

Thanks for that Andy, i think what i ought to do is start with a clutch change, started slipping the other day, stick in a lightened flywheel while i'm there, & get it remapped as is running on 97 ron & see what we end up with. I don't expect it to last much longer having 140 thou on the clock & it slaps when cold. Are you ever in the Notts area mapping Andy by any chance?
