Default GEMS ECU

do gems ECU's come with optional or permanant Anti-lag? i think the launch control is switchable but from what ive read the ALS is ment to be permantly on?

if someone could confirm or clarify the above that would be great.

We have a group N gravel GC8 - the GEMS in ours has switchable anti-lag - I gather it has to be as running it on all the time damages the engine.

Not sure of this is the same on all GEMS systems. I know two very good GEMS mappers if you want info - pm me and I'll give their details.

Our GEMS is also linked to the centre diff on the car which is active and controlled by the ECU...

I have a GEMS ECU on my road going Scooby, mine is mapped by Steve Simpson at TEG Sport. Not sure if this is one of the guys commented on in the las post. I have the anti-lag on permanently, it sounds nice. I don't let it operate all the time by either dipping the clutch or pressing the brakes but since fitting my APS 3.5 inc bore de-cat itis difficultnot to let it sing. From personel experience Steve Simpson is easy to talk to and will be honest with you. I have always asked his opnion via e-mail which may have gone on for a month or more before a final plan has been put in place. Once on the rollers he has always done as agreed even though on my last re-map to 416 bhp he stated "at 97K miles I won't go any further" I had got him to push to the 416. In my opinion he is a honest guy, yes you will see posts on Scoobynet and SIDC that put him down. I would say they have not sounded him out prior to doing work and he has been left too pick up the pieces.

cheers so if its switched off why the poor cold start? i thought this had something todo with the ALS why gems are diicult to cold start?

can they be both fitted with a switch rather than the clutch pedal technique?

how aggresive is the ALS or is that down to the mapping?

any ideas on a rough price to get a gems mapped with LC and ALS added?

thanks again

I was under the impression that the GEMs had trouble cold starting, ALS or no ALS i.e. not necessarily ALS dependent?

If the ambient temperature is below 8 centigrade, mine can be a real sod to start but other days it will be fine.

Is there much of a difference between road GEMS and competition GEMS??

I know we have mapped our ALS less agressively as it was very harsh when we got it, also have never had any trouble starting it - hot or cold. When the TPS failed - starting it was an nightmare and we lost the ALS...

Don't think so, if there is any difference it will probably be down to the mapping criteria. Where in Lincolnshire are you?

GEMS "road " ECUs don't have the ALS and launch option. The board and hardware are the same on both road and competition units but the road version has some software deleted to bring the price down.Cold start tables etc are all identical.

GC8 versions on 2.28, 2.31,2.32 GIN files aren't too bad at starting. The problems started to occur with the 2K versions due to a different method of calculating engine speed and timing. We have a N12 which will not start on a GEMS but is fine on Simtek or Motec...

All ECUs with ALS have the option of activating thru the throttle pedal (not clutch) or via a switch to ground. The ALS does not influence starting if turned off unless you are using a permanently jacked open throttle in which case the rev limiter can tend to make starting more difficult.
