Default Whats the best ECU for DIY mapping?

As title, I'm wanting to map my own car as it's something I've always wanted to do. So the question is, whats the best way to go about it? I'm after a plug and play style ECU so I can swap between standard and the one I'm working on. What options are available, is the Link G4 any good and is it truely plug and play? I have an MY99 UK Turbo so open source is not an option without reverse engineering the M32R inside the JECS and doing alot of work and research. Also with it being an MY99 and the Link G4 coming from New Zealand, will it need a couple of wires swapping like JDM stuff or not? Would a piggyback be a better startpoint or getting a cheap bugeye to play about with current open source stuff? Another option is get a Simtek fitted and mapped, but get the cable and software so I can make my own tweaks. I'm not wanting to ever make a career out of it or map anyone elses cars, but would like to do alot of trackdays etc.. and just want to be able to make slight tweaks whenever I want to suit new mods and just understand better what everything does and how it all fits together.

Any advice much appriciated.
Regards, Shane.

Link will be a very good starting point. But also consider a Syvecs if you're budget will stretch to it, it's more capable than the G4 in a number of departments, but might be a tad overkill for what you want.

Is the Syvecs available to anyone though or just trade?

Available to anyone, come ready to go, no dongle or lead required besides a simple CAT5 patch leads. Closed loop knock control, ALS, launch control, traction control, closed loop idle control, multiple maps, closed loop fuel control flexible configuration all included in the base price of the ECU.

Do I just need to fit my own MAP and ACT sensors then to get it up and running? Is there a base map pre-loaded? What I mean by available to anyone, is can I order one direct from Syvecs and it arrives in the post for me to sort out or does it have to be ordered through the likes of yourself as part of a fitted and mapped deal?

I can supply on a box only basis and pre-configure so that it will at least fire the engine. It can be configured to use factory MAP sensor, ACT can be added a number of ways.

Why not buy an unloved Bugeye STi to mess around with......lots of headroom available before it goes bang !!! and the drivetrain is robust too

The Denso ECU is also well researched.

Budget is a major factor in this, so I'm thinking best way to go about it is get a Simtek fitted and mapped and use the second map as a learning tool. Then I can swap back to a fully working safe map easily. Would like to go Syvecs, but I'm guessing the price of the ECU on its own is more than the Simtek supplied, fitted and mapped? And the Simtek is more than capable for what I ever plan to do with the car.

That would be a good plan.
