Default Turbo question

Noob question!

I have a 96 turbo 2000 import, if I was to get a second hand turbo. One that spools faster, which should I get? and is it just as simple as swapping it over? or does it need a remap?

Cheers

Is yours a MY96 with a top-entry TD05H 16g fitted... or a MY97 with a front entry VF24 (I think) fitted.

If you get the correct top entry or front entry replacement, they just swap over, but you defo need a remap. You will invariably have to upgrade your injectors too...

Now your asking a question! haha

Ive only recently got the car and im new to all this lol. How can I tell which is which? id like to know what turbo it is anyway. What size injectors? and if I did swap it over would it need the remap done asap or would it be ok for a few weeks? until I sorted cash out.

Cheers

The tdo5 for the T2000 was changed to a td04 whenever the year of change was. td04 is a fast (fastest common???) spooling turbo, tho lacks top end power. TBH not sure what you have i.e. what year it changed. The turbo model should be stamped on the turbo so you coud read it. If you change turbo you will need to get it mapped at the same time.

Thing is what is it you're not happy with? The TD05H is a fine turbo with decent spool and 340bhp potential for mapping later on.

And the VF24 is even more spritely the the 05 (I think), with a 320 (I think) mapped potential.

If yuo wan th the mother of all low-spooling tubs, the Andy forrest's TD04 Hybrid is pretty much the fastest one, but because of that, it tops out at 290-310 potential.

Horses for courses....

Ahh cheers! if it is the td04 then you think I should leave it on? im after around 300-350bhp. What upgrades should I be thinking about doing?. Its pretty much standard, it said on the advert when buying that its been remapped...How would I be able to tell if it has?

You're unlikely to get 300 out of your TD04 (IF you have a MY97) - 280 is the typical figure....

As mines a 96 it should have the td05? if so can I then reach 300bhp+ or will it still need replacing?

MY96 = Sep 95-Aug 96 = TD05 top entry

MY97 = Sep 96-Aug 97 = TD04 front entry

See?

Sould be stamped on the bottom of the silver coloured compressor cover

A direct fit would be a VF35. Cheapish if you can find a decent one second hand and very decent spool and upto 350bhp - but typically 310-330. They're lively turbos.

There's been a few on eBay in the last month with 20k-50k miles on them. Go for around the £250 mark...

If I was you I wouldnt buy a second hand turbo, save up and do it right, you might want to start looking at a new stage 1 exedy clutch at that power aswell because if yours starts slipping you will have to pay the mapper again to finish the job

It's the date of manufacture that's the one to go by! It could have been sitting at the factory or showroom for days/weeks/ before someone bought it, and, therefore, at that point it would be reg'd!

Also what do you mean Turbo 2000 import? A non-UK Euro/RoW one? (they're mechanically the same as the UK Turbo 2000, anyway).

mc-e, if it's a JDM import then it will be a "WRX" or "WRX STi" variant - not a "Turbo 2000" (UK moniker - and a 'lesser' car). It'll either have a TD05H 16g top entry if a MY96 or, if a MY97 then, I think, VF23 or 24 front entry...

Post up date of manufacture and your 7-digit Applied model code (if you can't see the turbo code on the comp cover)...

Turbo code is on compressor cover at the bottom.

7-digit Applied model code is on metal VIN plate riveted to passenger side suspension turret.

Don't appeal to me, I'm afraid....
