Smile valve lifters

Hi all,
i have a my97 impreza 2.0l sport (phase one engine) and he's just gone over the 130.000 mark.somtimes i can hear a tapping noise put when i put foot down on gas it stops,or if left on tick over it you can hear the tapping come and go. can any one tell me what sort of lifters are fitted and how hard are they to replace and what would be the best oil to use for this type of engine.

many thanks,

It's really simple to adjust the valve clearances on a non-turbo motor, because they are 'screw and locknut' type.

All you need is a 10mm socket on a 1/4 drive ratchet to take the rocker covers off ( and some threebond sealant to put them back on with), a 10mm spanner, flatblade screwdriver, and a set of feeler gauges.

8 thou inlet clearance and 10 thou exhaust IIRC.

10/40 Semi Synthetic oil will be fine for your engine
