Default ABS light on after I cut through the wires!

Ok- proper muppet moment for your amusement- was trimming the piece of metal behind the front bumper, and cut the wires going to the ABS!

After extensive swearing and cursing, I reconnected all the wires, but light stayed on the dash.

So today had the bumper off again, and soldered and heat shrunk all the wires back. My mechanic even popped by, and we are both happy with the wiring, but the ABS light remains on.

So:

- ECU reset by disconnecting battery
- ABS reset again by pulling fuses
- And all fuses double checked

But light is still on. So have come to the conclusion the ABS ECU isnt happy, which my mechanic also suggested.

Question is, can I find out what its unhappy about?
Are all the ABS units the same if I look for a replacement?
Any other suggestions?

Its a 98 classic with a Simtek.

All help much appreciated.

Thanks

Grant

Have you driven it since? It may still see a missing signal? Tbh iv never heard of anyone 'repairing' an abs loom as the abs ecu has to see a signal ie a voltage from each wheel, any repair in the loom would cause resistance therefore altering the signal strength and putting the light on, I'd probley replace the sensor IMO

The wiring should be repairable, its normally bus circuits that can be dodgy to repair due to resistance. As above though has it been driven as it may need a signal for the light to go out. Worse case is that the supply voltage shorted with the signal circuit and shorted into the module but that would of been very unlucky.

I have driven it- I thought all was well as ABS light was off, but then comes on as soon as I go above say 2mph.

Its not one sensor- its the block of 25 wires that goes to the ABS unit- that took a long time!

It was an anlge grinding disc through the lot- anything could have happened! Are there any diagnostics you can do on these?

Im not sure what else to do at the moment, and really need that light off, as car is having a lot spent on it shortly, and dont need this extra expense. Also cant to any events with the ABS light on, and dont really want to remove the bulb in the dash.

Appreciate your suggestions above gents.

I would say you have shorted the system out. Check all the fuses, if the fuse is blown it puts light on..

Out of curiousity, have you tried and brake to a point where the ABS comes into action?

I'd say there's a fair bet the module is knackered!!

I can tell you I have no ABS

Am I correct in saying that the ABS fuses are in the dash, below the steering wheel? I have checked the two ABS fuses there, and they arent even blown- did think one would be blown so was wondering if there is another?

Not clever is an understatement- caught one of my left fingers with the flappy disc on the grinder too! Im not actually as much of a muppet as I sound!

Have been through them twice, and my mechanic popped through and agrees as well, so possible, but unlikely.

If I could understand how far that wrigin went back into the engine bay before it joined some others, I would try and get a new wiring loom.

Thats why Im after a schematic or something like it.
