Default temp-guage ?

noticed my 96 sti temp guage seems to act a bit odd......
if your in slow traffic or just sat there ticking over it gets up to temp as normal [if you sit there long enough the fans kick in and then switch off....back on.....then off] so far is this normal ?

ok the weird bit, when driving at normal speeds the temps drop right down to the c-mark [heaters in the car still give warm air tho]
so it begs the question has the thermostat been removed? if so why? and where is it?

any input guys?
thanks

the temperture gauge sensor could just need replacing, mine did exactly the same thing as your seeing, i replaced the coolant sensor & thermostat with no luck & turned out to just be this sensor

ok update........all expansion bottles seem fine......
when ticking-over the top hose on the rad will get up to temp and get nice and hot.......but the lower one stays pretty cold......
if clark822 is right and the thermostat is down that side , it kinda points to the thermostat not opening at the right temps?
which could be why im losing coolant?
