NON-SAMCO MY97/98 TURBO HOSES... ???
Are any members running any of these much 'cheaper' MY97/98 silicone turbo intake hoses listed below (there are loads of 'em on ebay at similar prices):-
Subaru WRX GC8 TURBO Inlet Induction Silicone Hose Pipe on eBay (end time 17-Jan-10 00:31:30 GMT)
Subaru Silicone WRX GC8 Turbo Inlet Induction Pipe Hose on eBay (end time 29-Jan-10 00:16:33 GMT)
SUBARU WRX STI 1996-1998 TURBO AIR INTAKE PIPE SILICONE on eBay (end time 10-Jan-10 18:07:43 GMT)
Do these hold up when the turbo's really sucking?! lol Or do they collapse under the great vacuum? I undestand the genuine Samco jobbie - all £200+ of it!!
- has steel bands embedded in its silicone layers, preventing this phenomenon... ?
Can anyone share their experiences of the cheaper silicones?...

You pay your money and take your chance, as they say
I've modified a couple of the cheaper inlet pipes to prevent them from trying to suck shut in high boost/power applications - Strategically cut it in half, and fit an aluminium/steel joiner with 2 jubilee clips.
You may/may not need inlet manifold spacers to get proper clearance for the pipe, once you've made it rigid.

Thanks fiestaboy (you seem to be exclusively answering my threads of late!).
Is the OEM plastic one up to the job, because it's rigid? Is the OEM one good for between 400-450bhp, or does its flexi area seriously hinder flow at that sort of power level?
(I'll prob be fitting the spacers/insulators, whichever route I take

If you don't want to spend loads of cash, it may be worth replacing the OE 97/98 one with an OE STi7/8 (or even better a SpecC) item - the pipe is still plastic, but slightly wider and therefore less restricive to airflow.
The newage variants have a slightly different arrangement for the breather takeoffs etc, but that's not really an issue

Will the STi bug/blob or Spec C one fit okay under a MY97/98 IM with or w/o the spacers?
Re the breathers, not a prob as I'm going for the vapours venting by the gearbox route - all ecological like

Yeah the New Age ones are VERY similar to the MY99/00 ones, I noticed.
Ah yes, Viper - forgot about them. So the Viper-supplied silicone intakes are well stiff/strong. I may have to check their ones out.....

aye i cant ever see how a turbo would create that much vacuum sucking air in from an air filter though, but yeah, mines like 6 ply or something.
i dont think your restricted to different version intake tracts, i fitted a different one but i was blanking all my oil re-circs off anyhow so it didnt really matter.

But if you're running say, 1.5 bar relative boost, then the vacuum's 'negative suction force' on full boost is gonna be 2.5 times greater than if it were a normal NA, no?.... Collapsed (non-reinforced) pipe city???
Yeah, I'm gonna vent breathers to the road, so ports aren't an issue.
Hey, 2nd one up from bottom - New Age Viper, £125:-

Will that fit under a v.3/4 manifold? Anyone running this pipe - does it collapse, etc.? (says it has wire reinforcement).

Ah that's helpful.
Looks like I'll need that other black flexi S-pipe too - or a short bit of 45-deg or 90-deg silicone - as my IK comprises RCM's large 'fat' 160mm cone + big 160mm ally trumpet + Z32 MAF!!! It's some cumulative length!
I reckon I'll have to 'mirror' your set up though, so as to be able to fit all that lot in the space where the MY93 ABS would normally be (I don't have ABS)...

Wrighty Did u have to take the inlet manifold off and move your power steering tank to make it fit? looking at getting 1 also, dose it make that much difference to turbo spool and horsepower?
cheers guys

Jozzy, im doing my own CAI and have a black 'S' silicone pipe that is now redundant yet brand new still. If its any use to you drop me a pm as i doubt il ever use it now. Id advise against using the newage tube, simply as it IS a bar steward to fit, and it is squashed slightly on the maf side like i said so doesnt fit right but iv made mine go on so il live with it. i could easily trim the take offs too i rekon so theyre not fouling the IM but i cannae be bothered now. id go for the one made for a gc8 OR relocate the PS tank. the newage tract and relocating PS tank is probs cheaper then buying the GC8 inlet tract?
heres the black S pipe

The standard black S pipe, maf and again brand spanking Apexi filter will be forsale shortly once i know my engine still works lol
pooeater ye the manifold came off, PS tank hasnt moved, although you can relocate them. as for performance your elimating the turbulence in the tract by fitting a smoother one, my engines not running but imo that will aid spool, which may inturn create more power, i duno, its possible! perhaps makes a difference in the sense that '10 things' will make a difference as opposed to 1 thing you change..if you get me?
Harvey is the man to speak to if you want one of these

Been speaking to API Dave and he says that for ease of hassle, just fit the correct v.3/4 intake pipe + PAS res/pump - which is what I'll do...

This is a MY97/98 OEM pipe surely?! (Seller states it's a MY99/00!):-

I thought the MY99/00 one was 'straight', like your silicone one above (apart from the 90-deg bend at the 'MAF' end, obviously)

jozzy, this is what came off mine

like i said, dont see why you cant fit a 99/00 one, aslong as you sort all your breathers/vacs out because thats the only real difference on the tracts.
sound advice from David @ API but if i were you, and your budget allowed. id get a less restrictive silicone one.

Yeah, it would make sense, seeing as manifold'd be off anyway... PLUS the fitting of the spacers! Otherwise it'd be a golden opportunity missed...
I'm sure I will get a v.3/4 Samco in the end...

Don't forget about the ISCV feed on the 97/98 that's not present on the 99/00 - Although you could just T into the rocker breather pipe for the takeoff, or just stick a crankcase filter on the valve, if you're mafless
lol just checked out pics of the v3/4 and v5/6 intakes on RCM's site and they are the same basic shape (bar the breather/DV ports).

just bought the asi one for my car, got the asi water pipes and never had a problem, got them on a group buy off here and as far as i can remember there wasn't any issues with them.........the water pipe feel and look the same as samcos....
So you reckon if I buy this...
Subaru WRX silicone Turbo intake induction GC8 96-98 : eBay Motors (item 300384141896 end time Feb-04-10 16:11:27 PST)
...then I'll have no issues with it collapsing?
its up to you at the end of the day, i am certainly going ahead with it as i can't see how it can be sucked in unless my filter blocked solid?? anyway heres a link to the group buy
