Classic WRX for £2k. Am I mental?
Hi guys,
I'm seriously considering buying a Scooby for around £2k. Would they all be complete dogs at that price? I only intend to have it for a few months and I can't think of a more entertaining car for that sort of money. My only concern is that it'd go bang after 50 miles!
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Mate i recently took mine as a part ex against another car i had a was concerned about the same thing, mine owes me about £1400 and apart from shaggered wiring to the turbo timer ( now fixed ) it has been great, you can never tell unfortunately and a scooby thats being sold with the words ( never thrashed ) is always bull as every scooby owner has floored it at some stage, what it boils down to are the fundementals, ie good oil, regular changes, decent servicing.... you can normally gauge the seller as to what your getting on that note ( please stay clear of a Yellow Impreza with white engine bay running a claimed 380bhp in the Gosport area of hants ) DOG DOG... Its common sense but ultimately when buying one of these your heart will overule your head but if you really doubt the car or the seller walk away as there are plenty of good bargains out there ...
run a HPI listen for knocking and watch for smoke there obvious ones, rest assured though it will make you smile

I bought a 94 wrx type-ra, apart frorm some small teething probs . . replaced steering rack, track rod ends, 4 coil packs, proper air filter, radiator and cambelt plus ALL pullies and tensioners.....the car was perfect for 2 weeks then the probs started. It is now excellent and reliable.
I paid £2600 for my99 uk2000 in september 2008 and have spent another £6000 on it. I thought it was a bargin to start with but turned out to be a dog!!
Do some research before you buy. If I know then what I know now I would never have bought it, but looked about a bit more.

I bought a 96 WRX import wagon, cheap car so wasn't expecting much. I love it!. Done 5k since the purchase with the only problems being split cv boots which I replaced one saturday. I changed all the oils when I got it, plus the cam belt was already done. Previous owner had it for 4 years and it was looked after.
Previously owned a BMW 840Ci and I find the scooby a lot more fun, similar mpg but parts are a lot more available.
I think 2K might be a bit much though it does depend wether it has worthwhile upgrades already.

We've had ours for 3 1/2 years now. Bought it off one of my mates so we knew a bit of it's history.
No real issues with it.
As has already been said, look for smoke when starting up and kinda weigh up whether or not you think the owner has hammered it or not.
You'll love it once you get it

Im in the same boat at the mo with a friends sti!
Thinking 2k is cheapish for an sti as the ones ive seen forsale on here are 5k, it's been used for a few track days and sprinting, but know he's serviced it well.
Just been mot'd, cambelt done and some rust being sorted on the rear arch, also had the box rebuilt by ZEN (not sure that means anything though now cause they've gone bust!!!)

I did the same 2 years ago on nye and have not looked back, MY93 WRX
You have to have a decent mech mind and know what your looking at, give it a good test drive, 50 mile plus if you want with lots of prolonged boost (after you've warmed it up), any major faults should show themselves. Any service history/reciepts/import doc's will help you too. They aren't all dogs at that age
On the other side, if it does go down after you buy it you should make your money back by breaking it.
Enjoy

Well after reading everyones comments I think I'll wait a few months and get a bugeye STI. I do really fancy a Scooby but I won't have any money to spend on it if anything goes wrong. The reason being, I've been out of work for quite a while but I've just landed myself a months work. It's very tempting to spend £6k on a nice STI and be broke for a while but I think I'll do the sensible thing and buy something in a slightly lower state of tune. I'm pretty set on either an e46 325ci or a B6 3.0 Quattro - cue the flaming! However, last week I was set on the scoob so I may well change my mind again. It's probably a daft question for a bunch of Subaru fanatics but, what would you buy for £3k?
No point in getting a Scoob old or new without some sort of funds mate, the fuel consuption alone will drain you
I gathered from your u/n you where from BM stock.
In answer to your question, my u/n would become E28er
though hard to come by now, as you will know much stronger engine(straight 6) and less financially demanding than a Scoob.
All that said, i was broke (unemployed) for 6 months of Scooby ownership and managed to get through it using it daily

That's probably good advice, I'm a sucker for speed and I'd struggle to drive a Scooby sensibly, so I'll think I'll wait until I've got some funds behind me.
From BMW stock I am! My first car was an e36 325i coupe. £3500 for the car and £3k TPFT! God I miss that car. So you had an e28 eh? You don't see many of those about anymore! Do you ever think about defecting back to the Bavarian made beasts?

Last BM was a E36 328i Coupe but was just a gap filler after loosing my Alpina
(check 'my garage').Yeah could easily defect if the right one came along (shhhhhhh
)Good luck which ever way you decide
i got a 97 uk turbo nearly a year ago for £1800 and ive used it daily ever since. only prob has been a split wastegate pipe which didnt cost anything to repair. its been on numerous mersey tunnel runs and charity runs and is still going well and its been floored a few times also
bodywork could do with slight attention but besides that im well happy and i love the car

I've got a really nice White WRX for sale that we took as a trade in earlier in the year. One of our best customers has had it on loan for [ ever it seems to him ] a coupla months whilst we sort out a largeish upgrade to his car. So l haven't seen it in a while but knowing him, it is probably cleaner and tidier now than when he took it away.
That is for sale at £2000 and is a well sorted reliable car. OR l have similar STi 2 limited edition in Silver at same money, well sorted and mapped and with a sunshine roof.
A road test demo can be arranged on either.

Complete rubbish!!
Scaling down the business voluntarily for family and personal reasons is not the same as going bust!!
It's crappy BS posts like this that ruins people's reputations.
I suggest you read the the link posted earlier which states the truth not this damaging speculative bollocks!!!

the point i make --- i now have a 1700 scooby turbo - FANTASTIC
even if it has just blown up :-(
best get one from a garage with a little warrenty and keep some spare cash to one side, as its already been said your going to need it for fuel
