damn that's a nasty noise!

at a guess? one of the pulley bearings?

sounds like the noise matches the revs - does it get faster / louder / more obnoxious when you rev it a little bit?

Yes it does, it only started when the snow came!?

What do you mean have a listen with a long screw driver? My car is a Impreza Turbo 2000 MY00 by the way, does this have cam belt covers?

This isn't going to cause my cam belt to break and ruin my engine is it, think it's safe to drive?

its not a heatly noise so yes i would investigate before driving. the cam belt is huge and runs accross the front of the engine behind the black plastic covers.
place the tip of the screw driver on the covers and press the other end to your ear when the engine is running. Be very carefull of moving parts, alternator belt and air con belt.
you should then be able to get an idea of where its coming from.

does the noise worsen when lights,heater,de-mist etc on as it could be alternator bearings.just a thought bud.

i had that kinda same noise on my honda CRX del sol, turned out to be the water pump had gone ***** up. So i would give that a check too if its not been replaced.. When i took off my water pump it had completly seized up you couldnt turn by hand at all. Dont drive it and check every pulley.

I've just been to the garage and the man said it could be the air conditioning pump as when we turned AC on the squeak changed pitch.

You could temporarily remove the AC belt (10 minute job) and see if the noise goes away if you want to be sure. It could also be the alternator, again remove the alternator / PAS drive belt temporarily to check. The engine will run fine without this belt but remember to put it back on again unless you want a flat battery!
