Hi guys , i changed my oil recently and ever since it sounds very knocky at start up . almost like a bloody diesel ! ...runs perfect when warmed up though ...think i may have to change the oil again as this may be the culprit me thinks ?? Do you think running it like this will f..k the bottom end up !??

Did you do anything to re-establish oil pressure before firing it up (prefill the filter, turn the engine over with the crank sensor disconnected etc.)?

What oil did you use then? Assuming you haven't used gearbox oil or something totally wrong, the concern would be that at some point you're going to find that the knocking doesn't go away when the engine warms up.

If the engine is standard then that oil is far too thick, especially in cold weather.

10w40 semi is the recommendation in the manual for that model year and this weather. Some will go lower at 5w40.

Also the MY97/98 sufferd from piston slap from cold, disappearing when warm. Mine has done 145,000 miles as a daily commuter (28 miles each way) and sounds like a bag of spanners when started in the current cold weather at 5 in the morning, but settles down within 5 miles or so.


Get it checked by someone reliable, just in case.
