Default skimming heads - need valves out?

So the engine's out, gotta get the heads off and then get them skimmed - do I need to take the valves out so they don't foul when the heads are skimmed or will they stay out of the way by themselves?

If you are having heads skimmed, DO get the compression ratio checked and use a thicker gasket if necessary.

I did neither, and my engine went bang: increased compression ratio plus heatsoak were to blame

no nothing bad just line everything up before you put the heads back on/time the engine up
