What is the flash sequence when you try the black plugs - two long flashes, three short?

When you say you tried an ECU reset, exactly what did you do?

And when you say you've got a new airflow sensor, is it a brand new one in a box from a Subaru dealer, or...?

Also, what model year and type is your car?

i followed the guide to reseting the ecu on that link that myblackwrx just posted,
yes it gives me 2 long flashes and 3 short
the MAF i purchased wasnt from a subaru dealer but it was from a parts supplier and came in a sealed box with genuine subaru parts on the box.
my car is a 96 sti import v3 with a v5 engine

Oh, cripes, this could be interesting. So what sort of MAF sensor do you have fitted - a V3 or V5 one, and with what sort of ECU and inlet manifold?

When you followed the ECU reset instructions, what happened when you drove the car along? Did the check engine light not start flashing at all, or did it start flashing an error code rather than the all clear? How long did you drive it before you gave up?

ah i now see your point i may have the v3 maf oh dear.
its a standard ecu and im guessing standard inlet manifold

it was flashing the error code whilst i was driving it i drove it for just over a minute and tryed about 10 times before i gave up.

That isn't a problem if it has the V3 MAF and ECU, but if it has a mix, you have all sorts of weird potential incompatibilities to think about.

If you want to give us any chance of helping you, you're going to need to be more specific here re. what you've actually got. One of the big mysteries at the moment is exactly how much of your engine is "V5". A version 3 inlet manifold won't fit v5 heads, for example. So, do you have a 5 short engine, a 5 long engine (with 5 inlet manifold), a complete 5 engine with ECU and wiring loom transplant, or...?

And what exactly was the history of the error? You say you've just fitted a new sensor. Did you fit that because the check engine light was on? If so how long had you been driving the car round successfully with the CEL off prior to that point?
