Could someone explain the exhaust system to me please. I've always had cars that just have a manifold, down pipe cat and system.
Could someone explain what the up pipe, headers etc are and do?
Pictures would be a great help.
I get exhaust fumes in the cabin and think I can smell them near the rad on my 98 classic.
Thanks

Headers are what is bolted to the underside of your car (Exhaust Manifold) and allows exhaust gasses to exit the engine. The uppipe sits between your headers and your turbo. This is bolted to your headers and delivers exhaust gas to your turbo's exhaust inlet side to drive your turbo. The downpipe is bolted to the exhaust outlet side of your turbo and forms the first part of your exhaust system, the centre pipe is the next part and the last part is your muffler (Backbox).
If you are getting fumes in the cabin it's more than likely coming from a leak somewhere on the uppipe. This is not uncommon. It may be cracked, or potentially you have a broken gasket on the flange where it joins to the headers. Alternatively you may have cracked headers or again a broken gasket where it bolts to the underside of your engine.
Get your car up on ramps and remove the big plastic tray under your engine/engine bay (if you have one) and take a good look. With the engine running you'll quickly see what it's all about and where the leak is coming from.

Well heres my take on it...
Exhaust manifold (for some reason a lot of people on here use the americanese 'headers' for these),
These join to the turbo via another pipe called the 'up pipe', up because it goes up from the manifold to the turbo(early newage wrx's have cats in these but not yours)
After the turbo is the down pipe with a cat in it.
Next is a mid pipe with another cat (in new age cars this is two sections)
Finally the back box.
There are also various oxygen and temperature sensors depending on model stuck in the pipework too.
Hope this helps, for pictures look at ebay or other ads on the web.
