Default Turbo whine- PLEASE HELP

Hey guys.
I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.
I picked up a 2000 model wrx with 140kms on the clock.
everything seems normal, except for a dreadful "whining noise" which is coming out of the engine bay whenever the car is is boost- whether it be 1psi or more. This happens in every gear.

Any body had these issues before? What could it possibly be?
First thing to come to mind was the turbo, but then again b4 i go changing parts i dont need, i thought i should check. Im taking it in on monday, but the heads up would be great.

Mods:
Frontmount IC
3" Exhaust

Thanks heaps in advance. Looking forward to some helpful info since this issue has been stressing me out hard.

Can you tell us more about this car? When you say it's a "2000 model WRX", do you mean you've got an early UK spec bugeye (which would be a 2001MY car), or a Japanese market classic shape Impreza WRX, or a UK market classic shape Impreza Turbo 2000?

"Noises" are notoriously difficult to diagnose over the internet. Obviously enough, we can't hear it, or stick our heads under the bonnet to localise it, and there are a large number of potential causes. Could be a leaking dumpvalve, could be a loose or split pipe on the pressurised side of the inlet tract, could be a damaged turbo, leaking exhaust (or exhaust joint), the list is a long one.

Best way forward is probably not to drive it too much and then get a proper opinion on it on Monday. The good news is that it could well be something pretty innocuous, so try not to stress too much.

That's because it's a ball bearing design. The reason I asked my 98 about the car is that his should have a journal bearing turbo in it.

Its the 2000 aus spec, last of the classic shape.

I took it to a mech, he didnt think there wasn't anything major wrong. But still to this day, it doesnt sound healthy to me.
Does a front mount change the sound in anyway? A mate of mine has a the same car, no frontmount, but same pod filter. He doesnt get this whine sound i do.
How can i tell if its a damaged turbo?
I know if i take it to some exhaust specialist, they will just say, "yea, exhaust leak".. and who knows if it will actually fix the problem.

Anyone have any other ideas or has encountered this issue before?

FMIC can/does change induction sounds quite a lot, and also with more pipework you have more joints, so more chance of leaks, and opportunities for resonances. The spec of your car is as per a UK Turbo 2000 so you'll have a TD04, unless a previous owner has changed it. This is doubly pertinent given the presence of the FMIC, as there's no real need for one on the standard turbo, so examine it and note the markings on the compressor cover.

Beyond that, the best way to get this issue diagnosed is by taking it to an experienced Impreza specialist. Doubly so if the car has an induction kit on it - not a particularly happy combination for a 99/00 car, especially if it hasn't been remapped to suit.
