Question How to identify a gearbox?

Is there a plate, stamped number or anything? If so, where?

On the one I bought, I've found a place where it looks as if there OUGHT to be something, but there is nothing there, just a blank area. It's on the right hand side, near the bell housing/front transfer diff.

Should be a white sticker at the top left of the bellhousing, with a code that begins with "HL-TY....." adjacent to the starter motor aperture. If that isn't there, the only way to get a positive ID would be to strip it, although you could pin down a few generic details by showing us a picture.

OK, found it, looked all over the damn box, never thought to look at the bellhousing

It says: TY856WN4CA, which is apparently a UK WRX STi 02-04 box.

It's supposed to have come from an 04 car, so that would be right.

Can anyone explain what "Centre diff type: Viscous 4kgf" means?

Also, "front diff: A.P. Suretrac"?

TIA

It's exactly what you'd expect to see on an early STi Type UK box. Means you've got a Suretrac front diff (as opposed to an open or plated one), and a viscous centre diff with 4 kilogram force friction coefficient. As you've probably seen from the chart you looked at, this is the "standard" Subaru viscous centre setup - there is a stiffer one available/

Thanks, it was the friction coefficient I wasn't sure of.

Bit of a thread resurrect...

I understand how an open front diff works, but how does the A.P. Suretrac one differ in the way it works (compared to an open type)?
