Default My Experiences with Alan Jeffery aka “The Engine Tuner”

I recently have had my Subaru Impreza’s performace (2004 Type UK) upgraded by a tuning company I’m sure many of you know as “The Engine Tuner” and would like to share my experience.

My specification was to achieve circa 400bhp and to use a one-stop solution.

After speaking to several tuning companies I finally decided to go with Alan Jeffery as he spoke my language and had several glowing references from members of ScoobyNet.

All arrangements were made and I dropped off my car one Saturday morning for them to begin the work. I was greeted by Alan himself whereby a nice cup of coffee was offered with a walk around the workshop explaining all the different areas (very impressed with the setup)

Alan took me through the entire components that were ordered for my car explaining all the reasons for each of the purchases. He even took the liberty of purchasing a nice grill which eventually covered the new font mount intercooler (looks fantastic)

The work would take 2 days to complete so I would pick the car up the following Wednesday after a shot break in Cornwall, I live in Portsmouth so timed the jaunt away with a mini break in Kingsand’s.

The Components.
MD555 Turbo
Hybrid Font Mount Intercooler
Plasma Coated RCM Headers
Induction.
Fuel Pump
I already had 650 injectors in the car from a previous upgrade.
Some other bits and bobs (Can’t remember)

The Pickup Day

I arrived on the Wednesday at around 11am but the car was still undergoing some additional work as there was a problem with some serious turbo lag, this was eventually fixed by adjusting something on the turbo (Penny?) as this was set incorrectly from the factory.

After this was sorted the car went back on the rolling road for some final tweaks by Alan’s son Martin, god does this man know his stuff when mapping the engine, I had several conversations with Martin and he always took the time explaining what he was doing and why (customer service is second to none!!)

After a few tweaks here and there we finally achieve 412bhp with excellent torque, obviously the real test was to get it out on the road which we did with Alan.

“Oh My God” what a transformation to the car, once that new MD555 turbo kicks in this thing really pulls and I mean really pulls, the car is just so quick through the gears and covers the road really quick, to say that I satisfied with the results is an understatement.

These guys even took the time to install all my new gauges in my plush new carbon fibre mount, Oil Temp, Oil Pressure and Boost, looks totally fantastic.

One final check of oil, water and tire pressures and I was sent on my way a very happy man.

Conclusion
In summary my experience with Alan Jeffery was nothing short of fantastic all his staff took the time talk to me whenever I had a question, their customer service was excellent and if I was asked to recommend these guys I would do so without any hesitation.

Will I go back and use them again? Oh yes I am already scheduling my next upgrade, again after speaking to Alan and Martin and nice new 2.5 bottom end will give me a big increase in torque which we all know is what really makes a car drivable.

I hope other ScoobyNet users who are thinking of upgrading their Subaru as I did find it informative.

A Big Thumbs Up to “The Engine Tuner” – Alan Jeffery

What is the MD555 rated to on V-Power?

Is it a 400- or 450-capable one, or what?

I believe the MD555 is the forerunner - and therefore now much cheaper - to the MD321 series.

Did you indeed get hold of it cheaply? If so, a right result, etc.

I doubt it's called plasma coating.... Or otherwise you'd have to have electrically-charged noble gases hugging your exhaust system LOL

I think that the md321 came before the md555, that that md321 is a lateral specc'd turbo and the md55 is specced by TD themselves.
Of course I may be wrong and perhaps Engine Tuner will clarify.
