you will find both engines will fit ur car as there both ej20 engines, but if you get the 98 engine it will b alot easier as you will not have to change anything e.g like swap sensors and the inlet manifold or the turbo housing, after 1997 they used a straight turbo and not the old 90 degree turbo, also the inlet air for the turbo goes underneath ur inlet mani, i have just put a 1998 into my 93 scooby

A 1998 engine will not fit, it must be a 1999/2000, unless you use your heads, the stud pattern for the inlet manifold changes after 1998, and don't even think about just swapping the inlet, it's just not that simple.

Thats wrong fella.

To the OP....With your heads fitted it will fit. Regarding the power, it will be the same as it was because your be using your existing ECU.

for starters the 94 engine has coil packs that bolt into the heads. the 98 engine has a single pack on top of the manifold. big differences. etc etc.

yes i no that, but the single coil packs will stil fit on the 98 heads because theve stil got the bolt holes, we had to use the 93 engine loom on the 98 engine, then we swapped the engine sensors because they changed a little, the problem we had was the throttle body waz different shape and the sensor,

I shall make it easy
92-96, phase 1 engine, 97-98 phase 1.5 engine, 99-00 phase 2 engine.
You can do a direct swap on a phase 2 engine, on any other engine you will have to take bits off etc to fit, so your best going for a straight phase 2 to phase 2 engine rather than a phase 1 to phase 2 engine.

So instead of just swaping inlet manifolds you swaped looms to accommodate the complete phase 1.5 engine? ...not sure if i would of gone to that extreme, fairone.

yeah, i was going to swap the inlet mani over which would have been easier because everything would have same like the injectors but i had found a crack which couldnt be repair and as i had bought a new turbo that went under the inlet mani and not over with a 90degree bend on it i pretty much had to use the 98 mani, it wasnt that hard, i have took pictures along the way so when i get them on the computer il up load them on here, any questions about it just ask

keep an eye on ebay, or try some subaru breakers theres always loads of subaru parts for sale. any 1999/2000 engine will do.

Fixed, because if straight swaps are the idea, a WRX/STi 5/6 engine won't.

The engine doesnt control the power output here, the ECU does, the engine may be identical but the ecu does all the work
