Depends what kind of use the car will see, if it is daily driver you cant go wrong with Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetrics but if it mainly dry use then got for Bridgestone RE070 or Yokohama A048Rs.

Mines running 517/465 and i use yoko A048R tires. Once i bought one set I couldn't bring myself to buy standard road tires again.

Depends on whether you want absolute grip or a bit of fun, on R888's mine sticks like glue, but can be provoked with a Scandi-flick on track of course.... RE-070's are a decent road tyre and I would expect 500/500 to unstick them quit easily if required.

Pal's Type-R is on Yoko Paradas, and they grip well and are very good at the limit of adhesion.

IMHO

I haven't been in a car fitted with F1's....

Has to be either A048's or R888's if you do less than 6000 miles a year.

I recently changed from F1s(GSD3s), not the assymetrics to Parada Spec 2s. In the dry the Paradas are slightly grippier, squealing less and they have stiffer sidewalls. They do tramline more than the F1
I don't push the car in the wet, but even I find the F1 gave better traction in the wet than the Yokos.
My car is a Newage with only around 270 bhp, mind

215's on 17's for 500bhp!!!

I think you need to think about your wheel size and tyre combination. Waste of time having that power on push bike wheels/tyres.

If yours is a real 500bhp, you are on a hiding to nothing imo. Like I said, I am struggling on 225 18's. I need to at least go to 235's on 18's.

As regards to 888's being too dear for occasional track days..... I would personally get another set of wheels and keep a track set.

Whatever you do, as soon as you go on track with your current wheel/tyre size, I doubt you would have much of any tyre left after some spirited use.

Worked perfectly fine on my classic for years, and many other classics at that power level.

If it works perfectly, then I suggest you tell the performance car manufacturers they have it all wrong then. You can't beat physics.

I was talking about normal people Banny, not raving loons like yourself.

My car is still in full road trim but even then it's hard work if you find yourself if heavy stop/start traffic of if you want to hear what the kids in the back are saying. Plus it drinks like a fish, need a degree in quantum spacial mechanics to fill up at the petrol station and gets all the wrong sort of attention.

That said I always wish I was in it when I happen upon an unsuspecting evo driver.

Mus I am still on 17s and will never go to 18s, as it spoils the balance of the car and the ride quality.

Sorry ! 888's are too expensive, but crashing a 500/500 car due to crap tyres isn't ?

I don't quite get that equation to compute !

Sorry.

R888 are dear specially for a lot of road use but i thought maybe if theres other options then that would be great if there isnt then i might just have to go for R888. or even get a two sets of wheels one in r888 and the other good year F1 or what ever.

i thought 18s are not for classics got a mate of mine who has 18 on his classic and he is forever getting slated for it lol

Why would i do that? They havent got it wrong.

We arent talking about an M3, 911, Aston, Ferrari or whatever else you can think of that has 18+ size wheels with sod all profile. The poster is on about a classic subaru!

Yes, wider wheels will give more grip, but its pointless grip on a true classic road going impreza at 500bhp+, been there done that, and didnt like the consequences at all.

215/45/17 gave adequate grip in all but wet conditions on nearly every type of road i came across. 225/35/18 were a danger, the followed the tramlines and undulations of the road far too much at normal power levels, but at 500+ it was exagerated beyond comfort. ie progress across the same road was always quicker on the 17's.

The classic chassis cant cope with 500+ for too long on uk roads without decent bracing IMO. It just screams torque steer at you, and plant your foot hard, with extra grip and you will soon sod off into the nearest hedge.

Newage, like yours, is a different car all together, and gets away with 18's and wider wheels due to the chasis strength, but i would imagine if you tried 19's, you wouldnt like the difference.

From experience i would suggest both. R888's for summer, goodyear for winter.

Steve,
Was not aware there was that much of a difference between the affect on a Classic, compared to a Newage, apologies. If so, then that is that then and I accept I made an incorrect statement. Apologies to Mus.

Paul,
Why would I change a habbit of a lifetime!
