Default Oil Pump Advice with 67k on clock

Hello everyone,

just after some community advice/exeriences..

Basically i have a crank oil seal leak, and the consesus seems that this will mean the scerws int he backing plate of my oil pump will have come loose.

I want to know. Is this a sign the OP is on its way out? The car is a 98 sti v4 with 67k on the clock. original everything engine wise.

has anyone had a similar ages n milages scoob and tighted the bolts and used the same pump without issue? Or has anyone done this only to have the pump go a little later and also screw big end?

Also the car does get used on the track.

Im trying to weigh the actual risk to cost...

car does get some track use.

advice welcome.

ta

THE PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE STICKS ITS THE MAIN REASON FOR BEARING FAILURE, THE VALVE CAN STICK AND REDUCE OIL PRESSURE AT HIGH LOADS BUT THERE IS STILL ENOUGH THERE TO KEEP THE OIL LIGHT OUT UNTIL THE REVS ARE DROPPED, BUT THE DAMAGE IS DONE AND THE BEARINGS HAVE OVERHEATED AND THEN THE CLASSIC BIG END KNOCK

GET IT CHANGED AND PUT A OIL COOLER ON TOO IF YOU USE IT FOR TRACK DAYS

Yeah looks like a new pump can be got for a reasonable price so i might as well. One of those modified ones.

Will put an oil tmoc on when i go fmic in the future i rekon.

Is there anything to worry about when fitting? does it require priming or anything complicated?

will get reading any manuals i can find.

We always check and service the oil pumps on the older cars when the cam belt is changed, its surprising to see the amount of backing plates that work there way loose over time with out the drivers being aware of a gradual oil pressure drop. Oil pressure gauges are also a nice touch.

Also remember to prime the new pump its very important.......

Pour oil into the pump prior to fitting then rotate the pump gear until the oil has circulated the pump, it doesn’t have to be full just enough to circulate. Not doing this will affect the pumps ability to draw oil up from the sump for the first time.
