Question Loss of power at 3000RPM

Just had to nurse my scoob (MY 99 Turbo 2000) back down the A12 to home.
I was accelerating, not too hard, and when the engine got to 4000RPM i felt a loss of power. I changed into 5th and the car was fine. However when the engine reaches 3000 RPM it starts juddering horribly and looses power. The engine runs fine below 3000RPM.
The check engine light came on when i turned the engine off and re-started it, however the idle is all over the place.
Does anyone have any ideas what the cause might be

TIA
