Default help major engine knocking

help i started my my99 turbo 2000 last night after replacing the clutch, and to my horror it made the biggist knocking nose.
It was doing it be for i started the clucth but thought thats all it was.
On closer inspection it is the engine but i carnt think why,
it only does it now and again but its really loud, its coming from some where near piston 3.
Is it dead and is it easy to replace than repare.
If so what do i go for, a stright swap or can you drop a sti stright in it place, what version do i go for and will it run on my ecu or will i need loom and ecu aswel.
Need some advice as i dont want to start wasting my money.
plz help

Take it out, strip it down and rebuild it. Sounds like you might have spun a rod/bearing. You'll never know until you strip it back though.
