Hawkeye engine into a classic
Hi
Have got a my99uk producing 340-350bhp (according to deltadash not verified on a rolling road) and has now done over 100k so aware one day i might be looking at a rebuild!
Cost of rebuilds with uprated components seem to be 3-4k with labour but my local scrapyard is selling a sti hawkeye engine (2.5l) with turbo(vf35?) that's only done 15k for probably less than £2k. Is this a good deal and is it a straight swap? Does the fact it has the variable valve timng heads complicate issues? Or can i use these with an aftermarket ecu? Or do i use the bottom end and sel the heads?
Too many questions, not enough knowledge,help!

I think you'd need to do a complete rewire of your car too, as (will be corrected if wrong) the hawkeye sti has a drive by wire throttle body, you'd need the loud pedal also.
Alot of work, but I can't see how it wouldnt work. If it was me i'd got for a blobeye sti, but you'd still need the re wire if you wanted to use the VVT heads and also get the ECU.

as long as you regularly service the car your engine will do another 100,000 miles no bother. A few of my mates have cars sitting at over 180,000 and have had no problems what so ever.
and yes the engines will swap over with out many probs but mind if you go down that route get the correct ecu

you can bolt the 2.5 block on to your current heads all you need is the block and a fully mappable ecu like apexi power fc or sim tek. its a bolt on job i did have a 2.5 conversion. the problem you will have is you gearbox. it wont take the torque of the 2.5 and will shred it. i know from experience. i blew the 2.5 up in the end and have now gone back to a EJ25 with STI internals. its alot more reliable and i think just as fast as it saves alot of weight, the handeling is also so much better now it hasent got the heavier 2.5. i would advise you keep it a 2liter and have it rebuilt its the way the car is designed to be will save you all the hassel ive gone through. i got my block built for £850 so if you shop around it is do-able for less money but if you want forged its going to cost you but thats a better way foward than the 2.5

No,the engine won't drop straight in, but yes you can use the bottom end with suitable map. Gearbox will need uprating though.
