Wink water temp

hello people i was just wondering if you can help me please. ive recently bought an 1996 impreza sti. wen driving home it was running fine, i went out last nite and gave it a bit lol. afterwards the water temp gauge in the car went up the top. ive tried bleeding it up today and cant really find any problems. ive taken the thermostat out and tested it and it was fine. went out after putting it all back together and bleeding it up again, i went through town at normal speed and it was all fine, got out of town and the gauge went up again so i slowed down and the gauge went back down to half way so im puzzled and all out of ideas.

HELP!!!!

Could be a number of things.
Airlock
partially blocked rad
worst case - Head gasket failure
Does the coolant come out of the overflow tank nr the battery? Is the bottom hose cold?
How have you been filling the system?

yeah some of the water has been coming out of the overflow pipe near the battery. ive had all the rad out but i never thought to check for a blockage... been filling it up in the black tank on the drivers side of the engine. yeah the bottom hose is cold
