I hear STI V4 are the best for a 96' is this right? What about WRX?

I've got my engine stripped but I think the heads may be cracked but am just planning ahead... If you can get a better BHP from chucking a different set of heads on then I'm game

 

STI 4 I've heard too... avoid certain sellers on ebay. Theres been a few collared for STI money for standard heads.... get pics of the cams and heads and post on here to make sure they are STI heads before you buy. I think STI heads have different spring sizes along with larger cams, so there would be a difference in power.

Im sure somebody will be along to give you a better idea

 

Yes - Sti version 3~4 heads would be best power wise for your MY'96.
As Tucker82 said, better lift and duration on the cams,better valve spring rates to match the cams and under bucket shims for a higher rpm.

STi Version 3 ~ 4 heads or STi Version 2 RA heads would be the best replacement if your looking for more performance.
