Default overheating problems

can anyone help with the above problem!

car overheated today after going down the a50 at a average speed between 70/80 mph traveled about 35miles then had to stop for fuel let it cool down fueled up no sooner had i left the garage the temp started going up so pulled over and checked the pipes top hose was hot bottom hose was cold and so was the right side of the rad coolant was bubblin in overflow bottle and pipes where fairly hard and heaters where blowing cold.

left it to cool for about 15 mins temp had dropped so drove home which was about another 10 15 miles temp never moved and heaters where ok.

thermostat has been changed as this has happend once before any info on this would be great

Did you use boost on the motorway journey? And I take it you didn't when you drove the second time, after letting it cool down? If so, it could be head gasket failure. Typically, when this happens, then when you use boost, it creates an airlock creating the symptoms you descibe above.

Ruling out the stat (seeing as it's new) then:-

- Unlucky random airlock. But this is the 2nd time so could be...

- Head gasket failure.
- Partially blocked rad (not likely).
- Water pump failure (not likely).
- Blockage in the engine's coolant galleyways i.e. badly furred up (not likely).

I agree with joz, most likely your getting air into the system under boost. Theres a gap opening somewhere which most likely will be in your headgasket.

Id say you need check all hoses for leaks, top up your coolant and bleed and then check if it overheats again - test under boost.

- Youd get extra pressure in the water system due to air getting in and in turn causing airlocks, Heaters will blow cold when this happens as the air passes into the heater matrix.

- Temp will rise above 3/4

- Fans will constantly spin

- You will see water being thrown into the plastic overflow when running very hot - this is due to air getting in and forcing the water out as theres no room for it to circluate in the system.

Im in west yorkshire and garages round here typically charge £800 for doing the job and replacing the head gasket with a metal one. This includes replacing the timing belt and skimming and pressure testing both heads ofcourse.
