Your OEM ECU can be remapped via EcuTek software. But it needs a licence to 'open' it first. So your first remap will be about £550 (+VAT). Subsequent full remaps - because the licence will have been paid - will be about 300 (+VAT), thereafter.
See JGM Simon's site for price comparisons between the Classic's main ECU options:-

Basically, you have Apexi Power FC; EcuTEk or Simtek available to you as cost-effective options. If you were to get a 2nd hand Power FC for about £200-250 though (without Commander), then that's probably your cheapest option. But the PFC and Simtek can't retard the ignition if, for whatever reason, the engine gets over its mapped-in detonation threshold - something the EcuTEk WILL do. This is very much a GOOD feature to have, as it could possibly save your engine from failure...

Joz, I suggested the Simtek as it deletes the prone-to-dying MY99 MAF sensor. Also, you can map in Anti-lag and launch control for a few quid extra. So Jamie would be spending more on the map yes, but saving circs £90 every 6-9 months which was the average my MAF lasted for when I had the Scoob previous to his goodself.
When I get into another Scoob, I'll be going Simtek over ECUtek or anything else.

c_o_b, I totally agree with you. So JS, we reckon you're best off with Simtek.
c_o_b, I know life hasn't been kind to you in the last year or so (ain't life a jip? ), but do make sure you get your posterior back into a Scoob soon (if you can, obviously)...
We all know it makes sense, don't we?.
Have you managed to snare yourself employment, then?
